Local School has mold problem

Local parents say mold in their school is making their children sick. Now the school is trying clean up the mess.

For weeks, parents of students at Washington Charter School said their children were coming home with bloody noses and allergy symptoms. They say they didn't know what the problem was, until they discovered mold in their classroom.

You can't see the mold. You can barely smell it. But parents say it's making their children sick.

Concerned parent Cathy Coleman told us, "Last night, she was vomiting. She had diarrhea. We were up ‘til 4 am. I don't know if it's related to this. I mean, there's so much that we have to learn."

Cathy helps out in her daughter's second grade classroom. Just recently, she noticed the other children at Washington Charter were getting sick and says it may be because of this mold. It's growing in the ceilings and underneath the carpet.

Principal Allan Lehmann says the school is making sure more children don't get sick. He sent a letter home to parents, explaining the problem and says he will continue to keep parents informed.

"We never want a child to miss a day of school over something we can control," Lehmann says.

Next week, the school will test the mold and decide how to get rid of the problem. For now, the children have been relocated to a different room, for their safety.

Before the kids are allowed back into their classroom, everything will be disinfected. The school says since this is a portable classroom, the mold will not spread. Cathy says the mold problem in this classroom will have to be cleaned up before she'll be comfortable letting her child go back.

“You're thinking that this school's gonna be safe, as safe as your own house."

The principal says he's not sure how long the mold has been there. He did say the classroom started leaking when it rained in November. Until the testing is complete, we won't know exactly what type of mold it is.
